Deck Railing Installation in Knoxville, TN — Wood, Composite, Aluminum & Cable Railings
New and replacement deck railings for Knoxville and East Tennessee homes, sized to code and matched to your deck.
The railing is the part of a deck you touch and see most, and on a raised deck it is also the part that keeps people safe. We install new railings on new decks and replace worn or loose railings on existing ones across Knoxville and East Tennessee.
Railing Types We Install
Wood railing. Pressure-treated or cedar posts, rails and balusters. It is the lowest-cost option and matches a wood deck, but it needs the same sealing as the deck boards.
Composite railing. Sleeved posts and rails in colors that match composite decking. No staining, and the finish holds up to sun and rain. It pairs naturally with our composite decks.
Aluminum railing. Slim powder-coated balusters that open up the view and need almost no upkeep. A popular choice with either wood or composite decking.
Cable railing. Horizontal stainless cables between sturdy posts. It gives the clearest sightline, which is why it is common on hillside and lake-view lots. It needs solid end posts and correct cable tension to stay safe.
When a Deck Needs a Railing
Under the residential building code used in Knox County, a guardrail is required when the deck surface is more than 30 inches above the ground below. The guard must be at least 36 inches high, and openings must be small enough that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through. Stairs with four or more risers need a graspable handrail. Requirements can differ inside city limits and under HOA rules, so we confirm them for your address during the estimate. Our Knoxville deck permit guide explains the rules in more detail.
Replacing the Railing on an Existing Deck
A new railing is only as strong as what it is fastened to. Before we quote a replacement, we check the rim joist, the post connections and the stair stringers. If the frame is sound, a railing swap is a short job that changes the whole look of the deck. If posts are loose because the framing behind them is rotted, that has to be fixed first, and we will show you what we found. See deck repair and the signs your deck needs repair.
What Affects the Cost
Railing is priced by the linear foot, and the material is the biggest factor: wood costs least, composite and aluminum sit in the middle, and cable costs most. Stairs, corners, gates and long spans add to the total. You get a written price for your layout after the site visit. Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace just the railing and keep my deck?
Yes, if the frame is sound. We inspect the rim joist and post connections first. If they are solid, we remove the old railing and install the new system on the existing deck.
Which deck railing needs the least maintenance?
Aluminum and composite need the least: an occasional wash is enough. Cable needs a periodic tension check. Wood needs sealing or staining on the same schedule as a wood deck.
Do I need a permit to replace a deck railing in Knoxville?
A like-for-like railing replacement is often treated as a repair, but rules vary with the scope of work and whether the property is inside city limits. We confirm the requirement for your address before starting.
